Breaking a Guinness World Record
Anything's possible if you're open to opportunities

Last week I broke a Guinness World Record.
Not for ZenSearch or any of my hobbies. It was for something I'd never even done before— playing air guitar, specifically for the most people playing air guitar at the same time.
I enjoy attending webinars and other learning opportunities. I've gone to sessions on coding with AI, designing for accessibility, HR trends, getting funded, and many others. I love getting exposed to new ideas, tools, and approaches.
I'd found out about a virtual conference for email marketing. I'm not a marketer, and I don't even send promotional emails (we only email the daily matches), but Nicole Kidman was the opening keynote speaker, and it sounded interesting. It was free, so I signed up.
The conference was amazing. Surprisingly, most of the sessions were very relatable, more than just the tactical how-tos I had expected. Sessions that dug into topics like What is Wealth? (hint: it's not money) and personal branding. And, of course, I learned some stuff about email marketing.
As a break between speakers, the organizers planned fun activities. One of those was the air guitar event, hosted by Flavor Flav and "certified" by a professional air guitarist named Hype and a representative from Guinness World Records.
I almost didn't go.
It sounded goofy. I thought I should be using that time to catch up on some emails or work on something else for ZenSearch. But it was only 15 minutes, not long enough to complete any tasks, so I decided to check it out.
It was super fun. Before I knew it, I was strumming along with a couple of hundred people on Zoom, for the requisite amount of time, doing the three "required moves" (windmill, swooping left and right, and behind the head).
I'm excited to say we did it! We broke the record. I'm now an official Guinness World Record holder!
So why am I telling you this? What's the point?
When opportunities arise, it's not always in the way you'd expect.
Sometimes, they come because you're willing to try something new, get out of your comfort zone, or attend a seminar that isn't even intended for you. Sometimes they ask you to dance around your office pretending to play an instrument.
I wasn't looking to break a record, but I did. And even if my 16-year-old nephew is unimpressed, I don't know anyone else who can make that claim.
What opportunities will you find if you're open?
