Let's practice some kindness.
A precept of yoga is the concept of Metta or Loving Kindness. It's the idea of wishing people success, health, and joy— whether they are people dear to you or people who have been a problem.
We need that compassion every day, but especially when things are tough.
Here's how it works
Start with a hopeful and positive thought— something like "May you be happy," or "May you be free," or any other thought that resonates with you.
- Picture yourself and think the positive thought about yourself. We are so hard on ourselves, especially when things are not going the way we'd hoped. Kindness starts with self-love.
- Envision someone you care about who could use some positivity. Repeat your wish for them.
- Think of someone you don't know. It could be someone you see in your day-to-day life, like a barista or delivery person, or someone you've seen here on LinkedIn asking for help. Someone who could use some hope. Repeat the good thoughts.
- Call to mind someone who's a problem for you or has hurt you. Maybe it's the hiring team that rejected or ghosted you. Maybe it's someone who laid you off. Maybe it's someone who's been dismissive of the challenges of job searching. This is the hard one—repeat the kind thoughts for them.
- Finally, imagine everyone together. Repeat the wish.
It might sound silly or fluffy or airy. Give it a try.
It's helped me get through some tough situations.
Being laid off, multiple times.
Having seven rounds of interviews with a company and being repeatedly told I was the "top choice," only to be ghosted.
Workplace disagreements or decisions that didn't make any sense.
Of course, I was angry; I'm human. I took a deep breath and wished them positive thoughts. Metta.
We can get through anything with Metta, Loving Kindness.
