Does it feel like there are fewer remote jobs? That's because there are.

I have to admit, this surprised me. Sure, I've read the articles about RTO mandates and heard anecdotally about people being forced back into offices. But I was skeptical.

I visit 20–30 company job boards daily, and that's not what I see. While some jobs specify an on site location or a 3-day per week in office policy, there are still a lot of remote openings and companies that are fully remote. At least that's my perception, influenced, I'm sure, by my pro-remote bias.

But the data tells a different story.

Remote roles make up only 22% of the jobs on ZenSearch. Down significantly from the last time we ran this query.

OOF. What a difference 6 months makes!

I was still confused. This doesn't align with what I see when I review company job posts or browse job posts on ZenSearch, so I dug into the specific domains ZenSearch focuses on.

𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 Remote = 46% Hybrid = 27% On site = 27%

𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 Remote = 36% Hybrid = 26% On site = 38%

𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Remote = 17% Hybrid = 20% On site = 63%

These numbers make a lot more sense and are only off by a few percentage points from last December. Unfortunately, trending toward on site and away from remote.

Why is there such a difference from the overall numbers? In addition to these job categories, we have roles like medical professionals, store associates, maintenance technicians, and many others, where employees must work in a specific location, which affects the overall percentages.

Although down a bit, there are still many great remote roles available if that's your thing.
