Have you already quit your New Year's resolution? If the answer's yes, you're in good company.
Today is officially Quitter's Day. The second Friday of the year is when most people who made resolutions give up on them.
Resolutions often come from a negative place. The idea that you're somehow lacking, that something is missing, or you're not good enough as you are. No wonder they fail. How are you supposed to put positive energy into something that starts with self-criticism?
Yet, the desire for growth, learning, and change is a good thing. And a milestone, like the beginning of a new year, is a natural time to pause to reflect and reconsider.
Here's something you can do regardless of whether you've quit your resolution, are still focused on it, or never made one.
Think of a single word that represents something you want more of.
Strength. Hope. Abundance. Love. Courage. Acceptance.
Whatever resonates with you.
Write it down. Say it out loud. Commit to focusing on it.
Mine is Appreciation.
Not other people's appreciation of me, but my appreciation of everyday life, and what each day brings.
Although I write quite a bit about acknowledging and celebrating the small wins, it's something I struggle with. So, I'm turning my attention and, more importantly, my intention, to being more appreciative.
To help me, I've been documenting at least one thing I've appreciated each day. By actively thinking about and recording it, I'm building a habit, a habit of appreciating.
It's only been nine days, but I've already noticed a difference— a shift in my mindset. I'm curious how I'll feel, what will be different, a year from now.
So, especially if you're down on yourself for quitting your resolution (or not), take a few minutes today to think of your word— your intention, for this year.
