    Card 3: Visualize complete success

What does complete success mean to you?

If you're working on a sales pitch, complete success could be closing a deal with an important prospect...or getting through the presentation without messing up.

If you're building a new feature, complete success could be a great team collaboration resulting in an exciting improvement that generates overwhelmingly positive user feedback...or releasing an incremental improvement.

If you're cooking dinner, complete success could be creating a gourmet masterpiece using exotic scratch ingredients...or just getting something on the table before 7:00.

Your definition is personal. It's unique to you and changes based on circumstances.

    Ok, so visualize complete success.

    Got it? Now what?

Plan how you'll get there. What steps do you need to take? What do you need to learn? Which skills will benefit from more practice?

Or, consider if you even want complete success. What can you compromise on? What are you comfortable letting go of?

How does this relate to a job search?

If you are among the many people who are , especially if you've been looking for a looooong time, maybe complete success is getting a job, any job.

That is certainly a big success, but is it COMPLETE SUCCESS?

For you, that might mean the opportunity for career growth, the chance to work on important projects, or an amazing salary (yes please to all three).

Maybe it means working in an industry you have a deep and personal connection to, having the flexibility to work when you are most productive, or working for a CEO you admire.

I realize that today's job market probably doesn't support the expectation of complete success, but don't let that stop you from visualizing it, working toward it, and keeping it as your goal.

Years ago I was introduced to Oblique Strategies cards. They're a deck of cards created by Brian Eno, each with a simple change in perspective meant to help one break out of a creative rut.

To use them, you pull 3 random cards from the deck and use the statements on the cards to prompt a different way to solve a problem or make a decision.

Throughout the year, I'll share a version of these cards, one per week. By the end of the year, you'll have a full set of well... strategies.
