Is there such a thing as too much filtering?
The other day I observed a user searching for a job on ZenSearch. [Side note: I am always looking for people willing to jump on a Zoom to let me see how you use it!]
She entered all her preferences— on site or hybrid in her city, the job titles she was looking for, within a single industry, and in happy anticipation hit the Show Jobs button. I watched as her face changed from smiling to disappointment.
There were just 5 results and only 2 from the past week.
I was disappointed too.
But then I thought about it.
If someone wants to be that specific in their search, ZenSearch supports them. Sure, there may be fewer results, but the matches are EXACTLY what they're looking for.
There's a school of thought that in today's job market, candidates are better off targeting jobs where they already have all the desired skills and experience, which if you're looking in a particular industry or geography, narrows your search drastically.
That's for you to decide. Be as selective or flexible as you choose, it's your job seeking experience.
In my user's case, she expanded her criteria to include remote roles, significantly increasing the number of matches and returning the smile to her face.
The reality is this job market is bonkers. Although ZenSearch has over 10,000 companies, ranging from everyday names to freshly minted startups, sometimes that doesn't feel like enough.
The good news is that thousands of new jobs are added to ZenSearch every day, and the number of new opportunities per week has been increasing steadily over the last few months.
So keep your preferences as you like them...just revisit your matches tomorrow.
